Hiring with evidence

Check qualifications and agreement details before booking work

Choosing a plumber is partly a qualification check and partly a scope decision. A familiar name, directory listing or attractive website does not establish that the proposed service fits the problem. Verify relevant information and ask for a clear deliverable. YYCPlumber is a reference and request service, not a contractor or a claim that every listed or responding business has been vetted.

Qualification information, a defined service scope and the actual agreement are three separate hiring checks.

Describe the service you are trying to buy

Separate emergency attendance, symptom assessment, a planned repair and a larger installation. Each can have a different deliverable and appointment arrangement. State the observed condition, property context and decision needed. A contractor cannot give a reliable complete scope from a vague description, and a customer should not assume an attendance fee includes every later repair.

Ask what the initial visit includes and what happens if further investigation is needed. Name any active safety concern and use direct emergency or building contacts where appropriate. A routine quote request should not become the only response to unsafe flooding or sewage. The service choice should follow the current condition, not the marketing category that appears first in a search result.

Verify relevant business and qualification information

Use Calgary’s contracting guidance for business-licence checks and Alberta’s contractor guidance for relevant qualifications and hiring information. Confirm the information for the actual business and person proposed, rather than a similar trading name. Registration can establish a particular status without guaranteeing workmanship or commercial reliability.

Ask what qualifications apply to the work, including any other regulated trades or qualified testing services. A general claim that someone “does everything” should not replace relevant checks. Keep the record of information reviewed and ask the contractor to clarify uncertainty. This site does not invent memberships, staff credentials or completed projects to substitute for those checks.

Use references and insurance questions appropriately

Request relevant examples or references from the contractor where appropriate and verify them through a sensible direct process. Ask about insurance and responsibility for the actual work without assuming a logo or verbal claim provides the complete answer. Avoid publishing private customer information or treating an online rating as proof that a different project will have the same outcome.

A reference can help assess communication and similar scope, but it does not establish hidden-system condition at your property. Keep technical assessment and hiring impressions separate. The written proposal should still explain findings, products, access and limitations. Good hiring evidence supports a decision; it should not become a blanket guarantee or a reason to skip the actual agreement.

Read the written scope and payment arrangement

Alberta’s guidance emphasizes clear written estimates and contracts, including work, materials, price, dates and payment. Ask what is included, excluded and provisional. Identify access, permits, tests, inspections, restoration and the response to discoveries. A short agreement can be practical if it still makes the responsibilities understandable. Do not treat a total amount alone as a complete scope.

Where prepaid-contracting rules may apply, use the official guidance and verify the actual circumstances and licensing information. Do not assume every deposit arrangement is lawful or unlawful from a generic article. Keep legal or dispute questions with the appropriate official service or advice. This site does not approve contracts or determine a particular business’s compliance.

Agree on decisions and follow-up

Name the person who communicates findings, obtains change approval and arranges access. Ask how unexpected conditions and changed products affect price or timing. Written changes should identify the decision before additional permanent work proceeds. A fast response can still have a clear record; speed should not turn an undefined recommendation into unlimited authorization.

Confirm what completion evidence and follow-up contact you receive. Product warranty, labour commitment and future service arrangements are different. Ask who handles a recurring symptom and what information is needed. Do not assume a contractor’s attendance means it assessed every concealed component or guarantees every future issue will be resolved without another defined service.

Keep the site’s role clear

YYCPlumber can help organize a factual request for human review. It is not the business carrying out the work, a contractor ranking service or an emergency dispatcher. Submission does not confirm contractor acceptance, an appointment, a price or a guaranteed response. State the actual decision you need help preparing and direct contacts already involved.

Keep the accepted scope, qualification information checked, findings and approved changes in the property file. If a later disagreement or new symptom arises, those records are more useful than a memory of a sales call. A thoughtful hiring process connects the service purchased to the observed need while preserving the distinction between evidence, technical review and commercial choice.

Questions people ask

Does this site say every contractor is vetted?

No. It is an information and human-reviewed request service. Verify relevant qualifications, business information and the proposed agreement for the actual work.

Does a licence guarantee workmanship?

No such guarantee is made. A relevant status check is one part of hiring; scope, references, insurance questions and the contract still matter.

Can a visit fee include every repair automatically?

Only the agreed deliverable is included. Clarify assessment, further work and approval before assuming the whole event is covered.

Who should review a legal contract dispute?

Use the appropriate official consumer process or advice. This reference does not determine legal remedies, contract compliance or liability.
